1-3 Nick McCormick led off the bottom of the inning with a single and then reached second when the ball got by the left fielder. McCormick later scored on a single by Michael Nelsen to cut the Falcons lead in half. Hensley, however, got the next two batters out to end the inning. Emmett loaded the bases again in the second inning, but this time worked out of the jam without allowing a run. Vista’s best chance to score game in the third inning when Brett Schaeffer singled, Stone drew a walk and Nelsen was hit by a pitch to load the bases. However, Evan Swartz and Brooks Mitchell struck out and Jonathan Stewart popped out to first base to end the threat.

Manteca  Vista’s first loss gives them a little more perspective with a young team heading into league play next week, said senior catcher Michael Nelsen. “I think it’s fine getting a loss like this,” said Nelsen. “It showed us that we have to go out and compete and not get handed the game.”

Battle of the Bats What the Eagles do have returning are the first four batters in their lineup; seniors Nick McCormick, Brent Schaeffer, Cole Stone and Michael Nelsen. Those four, no doubt, will be at the center of the offensive production this season. McCormick, Stone and Nelsen are first-team all-league performers from last season.
